Understanding the Alberta Impaired Driving Remedial Education Program: What You Need to Know

If you have been charged with an impaired driving offence in Alberta, you may be required to complete the Alberta Impaired Driving Remedial Education Program (AIDREP) before you can move forward with reinstating your driving privileges.

This program is designed to help individuals better understand impaired driving, the risks involved, and how to make safer choices in the future. While the situation that brought you here may feel overwhelming, the program is intended to support learning, reflection, and positive change.

What is the Alberta Impaired Driving Remedial Education Program (AIDREP)?

Participants must complete an approved course before they can move forward with licence reinstatement requirements. The program focuses on increasing awareness of:

Types of Courses

There are different courses within the program depending on the individual’s circumstances. Courses may be offered online (virtual classroom) or in person. These may include:

Planning Ahead Course

This 1-day course focuses on education and awareness. Participants learn about how alcohol and drugs affect driving, the legal consequences of impaired driving, and strategies to prevent future incidents.

IMPACT Course

This 2-day course is designed for individuals with more serious or repeat offences. It explores the broader impacts of impaired driving on individuals, families, and communities.

What to Expect in the Course

Participants are expected to attend the course sober and ready to participate, ensuring a safe and productive learning environment for everyone.

Completing the Program

Once the course is completed, participants will receive a Completion Letter by email. This document is important and is required when visiting a registry office to move forward with the next steps in the licence reinstatement process.

Depending on the individual case, additional requirements may include applying for the Ignition Interlock Program, which allows individuals to drive with a device installed in their vehicle that prevents the car from starting if alcohol is detected.

Moving Forward

The goal of the Alberta Impaired Driving Remedial Education Program (AIDREP) is education and prevention. By understanding the risks of impaired driving and learning strategies to avoid it, participants can move forward with safer habits and greater awareness.

If you are required to take part in the program, completing it is an important step toward getting back on the road responsibly.
